Who hasn’t heard of the term “Bluetooth”  nowadays?  Have you  noticed how almost every electronic gadget has it? And if you are not “tech-savvy”, then perhaps you are at a loss as to what it actually refers to and how it really works.

Bluetooth technology was created by several companies (such as IBM, Intel,  Ericsson, and Toshiba) that formed a “special interest group” so that they can find a way to connect their products. This also indicates that the Bluetooth technology is not owned by a single corporation.

Originally intended to replace cable wires and other connection devices, Bluetooth is a small chip and software that allows a wireless means of transferring data between electronic devices, such as your laptop and your cell phone. It allows the user ease of access among gadgets without even breaking a sweat.

One of the most ordinary misconceptions is that Bluetooth has a broadband range. This is furthest from reality, in fact,  it only transmits data using low power radio waves, about 2.402-2.480 Ghz.

Bluetooth in gadgets are usually equipped with on and off features so that you do not accidentally send information to the wrong device. For instance, you might want to send information from your cell phone to your laptop but instead the information gets transferred to your PDA. This also permits you to save on battery life especially if you are on the go.

Similar to any other wireless technology, users also concern themselves with the security of their Bluetooth-equipped devices. But there really is no need to worry because the makers have placed a couple of security measures.

Bluetooth devices are equipped with device-level and service-level protections. This includes identification and authorization procedures, which as long as they are turned on is sure to stop unwarranted access.

On the other hand, it is always to your advantage if you take additional precautionary measures in making sure your Bluetooth-capable devices are secure, such as ensuring your security feature is up-to-date (these hold true particularly for devices that have access to the Internet).  And most Bluetooth-equipped products need updated device drivers from time to time to maintain proper communication between different devices.  So check our recommended method to see if you need to update your Bluetooth drivers.
